Day As Night #20: Happy

(as usual, click to expand)

Webcomics!

I read a lot of webcomics.  In fact, reading the webcomics is sort of a morning tradition for me - wake up, put on some tea, and browse the internet while I regret getting out of bed and shiver in my icecold apartment, simultaneously fighting the urge to turn on the electric heating.

Anyways, I figured I'd post some links to my favourites.  These are all comics currently being released at least once a week, and all are worth checking out.

Amazing Super Powers:  There is no plotline to this comic.  Or regular characters.  Or anything that could really sum it up easily.  Basically, it's just skewed humour, written by guys primarily for guys.  There are jokes about beating up children, sexual inadequacy, movie plot holes, dinosaurs, ghosts, and so much more!

Extra Ordinary:  Sickeningly cute, semi-autobiographical comic about a girl, her cat, and her boyfriend.  She acts like a six year old most of the time, and, well... I don't know.  It's really hard to explain, because the whole strip is basically non sequitors.

Fudge That Sugar:  Observational comic about a rather odd girl, and some of the bizarre stuff that happens in her life.  At its best, it reminds me almost of a webcomic version of Seinfeld, only with the role of Jerry being played by a spectacled Canadian twenty-something.

Penny Arcade:  Blah blah blah.  Penny Arcade.  Blah blah blah.  Video Games.  Blah blah blah.  Most well known Webcomic out there.  Blah blah.  Revolutionized the webcomic field.  Blah blah blah.  Bird sex.  Blah blah blah....
Questionable Content: You've read QC, right? No? Okay, here's the basic rundown: an Indie guy gets a crush on an Indie girl. They flirt outrageously for a long time, and then some drama develops. And then the series gets funny. It has poo jokes, crazy robots, charming OCD women, smarmy goth girls, clueless guys, more poo jokes, and a yelling bird.
xkcd:  Another really well-known webcomic.  This one is science-oriented, with jokes about tech support, math, schrodinger's cat, and geocaching.  I have to admit... sometimes I don't get the jokes.  Because I am not a science guy.  But when it's funny, it's friggin' hi-larious.  Also, there are several websites dedicated to explaining the xkcd jokes.  And that's funny in and of itself.

Day As Night #19: An Open Letter to Nickelback

Actually wrote the script to this one on my last day at work, about fifteen minutes before getting laid off.  I know, I know, it's not very topical.  But I think it's funny, so there.

Day As Night #18: Too much "random" on the internet...

I've never giggled so hard in my life.  That final panel kills me.

Day As Night #17: Sadly Autobiographical...

Hey, look!  Finally, a new Day as Night update!  This one's been on my desk for a few weeks, slowly being added to in moments of inspiration.  Yes, I love diet coke. And I have been known to leave restaurants that only serve diet pepsi.  And yes, this makes me sad.

As usual, click if you want to enlarge.

Film Fridays: You haven't seen the Dark Knight?

During a conversation with a co-worker, I came to a stunning revelation:  he had never seen The Dark Knight.

"You've never seen it!?" I asked, completely shocked.  It was as if he had said he had never had ice cream, or was never let outside of his mother's basement until the day he turned eighteen.

"Never got around to it, I guess," he shrugged.

This might not seem weird to you folks out there on the internets, but I should explain.  He's seen every other batman movie.  He was in the line for Iron Man 2's debut.  He owns over three thousand comics.  In short, this is a guy who should be able to quote the movie from start to end.  He's about two degrees of nerddom away from wearing a batman T-shirt to work, and just yesterday he told me in all seriousness that he's debating using the universal greeting from the transformers movie when meeting new people, just to see their reactions.

So, yeah, he should have seen The Dark Knight.  As should everyone, because it's an amazing film.

Instead, he was perplexed when I asked him "why so serious?" in my creepiest Heath Ledger voice, and he had no idea what the Hell I was talking about when I mentioned making "this pencil disappear".

Trust me, my pop cultural references were comedy gold.

Something inside of me snapped, which is to be expected when you're a movie and music geek of epic proportions.  People not sharing the same cultural experiences as myself must be educated - this is what we in the western world call "progress", and what every other culture in the world calls "why we can't speak our own language anymore".

On my break - instead of, you know, eating - I ran home, grabbed my DVD of  The Dark Knight, and dropped it on his desk, beaming like a proud father.

"Trust me, you're going to love this."

And that was when I realized that I approach movies much like jehovah's witnesses approach religion - I have to spread them around, and convert the masses.  I think I'm only about two weeks away from going door to door, and saying "greetings, do you have Charlie Kaufman in your life?" to random strangers.

I'm about two weeks away from declaring a holy war on the Wayan brothers.  It'll be a Jihad for the ages.

I was thinking about this, feeling a little guilty for having dropped my DVD on my co-worker's desk, when I made a new revelation:  I'm not the only person who thinks this way.  Apparently, my co-workers agree with me.    Because they were all equally surprised when they found out he hadn't seen the movie.

And they were just as surprised that he hadn't seen Fight Club, either.  Or Pulp Fiction.  Or Avatar

By the end of the day, he had about five films stacked on his desk, because some of the freaks I work with actually drove home on their lunch breaks to give him these films for the weekend.

I work with some strange people.

Ah, XKCD...

I wish I could put a Day as Night post here.  But, those things take a good two hours to do - and I don't have the time to do them on the weekdays.  Because, as of late, I've been doing most of my posting on the weekends - prepping for the week, as it were.

And I don't want to download a bunch of images onto my work computer.  That seems like a very bad idea.

So, in lieu of actually posting a day as night strip for the next little while, I'll just post to an already existing webcomic - to at least keep tuesdays dedicated to webcomics.

And don't worry - there will be new Day as Night strips.  I actually have scripts written, and everything.

Until then, hope you enjoy XKCD.

Music Mondays - An Actual Conversation with a Credit Counselling Agency:

During the work week, I process papers in a Collection Centre.  It's boring work, and part of it involves talking to credit counsellors... people who try to consolidate the debts of the broke and set up payment arrangements with the creditors.  They have a job just as depressing as my own, and they have to deal with a lovely class of people - people that don't pay their bills, get sick of harrassing phone calls, and so enter a credit counselling service... and then are surprised when they're expected to actually, you know, pay their bills.

I was discussing this phenomenon with one of the counselling ladies, when she said she'd had enough of it.  That she wasn't going to take it anymore, and would just call them on their B.S.  "Just like that song," she said.

"What song is that?"  I asked, completely lost.

She didn't know the name, but she started giving me the lyrics.

And that was how I wound up singing Twisted Sister's "We're not gonna take it" over the phone with a credit counsellor in her mid thirties.  And how one of the collectors, upon hearing it being sung, decided to join in.

Strange.

Day As Night #16: Dating Advice

Another day, another comic.

Happy Hitler's Birthday, everyone!

Day As Night #15: I wouldn't recommend trying this out, if I were you...

Another webcomic starring batman clips.  I think I just need to make a batman-themed webcomic series.  Because they're just such great images to pilfer.  I mean, look at the face of Gordon in panel #2!  They don't get any better than that, do they?

DO THEY!?

Oh, right.  Click if you wanna read, blah blah blah.

Day As Night #14: I'm pretty sure this has happened to you...

Comic's up!  As usual, click if you want to read, and lesse who can name the movie first.  (Hint:  It's awful, and it's one of my favourites).

Day As Night #13: Not Even Remotely based off a true story...

...okay, maybe it is.  Don't tell anyone... but I was pretty much this much of a dick in english class throughout high school.  Explains a lot, eh?

As usual, click if you wanna read.  And let's see if anyone can guess the movie I stole the images from?

Day As Night #12: Worthless Filler

Another week, another strip.  The funny thing is, I actually have a bunch of scripts written up... but my upcoming trip tomorrow morning (I have to be up for 4 am!) means I have to post this.  Maybe I'll post another strip, later in the week to make up for it.

As usual, click if you wanna read.

Day as Night #11: I really don't know where I was going with this one...

This one was a bit weird.  I grabbed the pics before having ANY idea where I was going with it, and then just started riffing.  For a little while, it was going to end with a joke involving AXE body spray.  Or something crude involving masturbation.

Then I pulled out an obscure non-sequitr, and went from there.  Enjoy!

(As usual, click if you wanna read, and props to the person who names the film first... and you have to know this one!)

Day as Night #10: Facebook Blues...

Holy god, this took forever to do.  I think I started at around midnight, and it's now 2:30.  My vision is kind of blurring, here.

As usual, click if you want to read.  And I think everyone can I.D. the movie, but still - points to the first to get it.

Day As Night #9: Autobiography

I was giggling near the end of this one.  Kristen Ball's facial expressions are priceless

As usual, click if you wanna read, and props to those who guess the original movie.

Day As Night #8: Yeah, this one is kind of crappy...

Apologies in advance.  I'm not a big fan of this one - it's just kind of crude.  These webcomic thingies can be pretty hard to make, I'll have you know.  So, yeah.

As usual, click if you wanna read.

Day As Night #7: Shazam!

And today's strip is *finally* up.  I apologize right now for the lateness, but apparently yours truly needs to sleep from time to time.

(As usual, click if you wanna read).

Day As Night #5: Avatar Sucks

To be fair, I actually don't mind most James Cameron movies.  But they do tend to run a little long, don't they?

(Remember, I Can't make it any larger.... you'll have to click to enlarge!)
